LinkedIn is one of the biggest professional networking platforms around the world and is a great way to share your achievements 🏆, find new opportunities 🔍 and connect with like minded people 👩👨 from various fields. As a high school student, LinkedIn can open many doors and help you enrich your high school journey. In this post, I have compiled some simple tips and tricks that you can use to make your profile standout!
Profile Picture → This should be a professional headshot that clearly shows your face. Stats show that a good profile picture can increase your views (and therefore connections) by 14 times! If you are struggling to find a good photo, my go-to suggestion would be to include your school photo.
Headline → Here you should include a concise description of who you are. This can include what school you go to, any leadership positions you currently hold or any other titles you have (eg. youtuber, blogger, co-founder, etc.)
Summary/About → In this section, you want to include key skills as this allows viewers to understand a bit about your personality. You can also include things you are passionate about. It is important to ensure that this section is fairly short (300 characters should be enough).
Experience → THIS SHOULD BE THE FOCUS OF YOUR PROFILE! Here you can include any work experience or leadership roles you have had. The most important thing to include in this section is a description of your role as this will help you stand out. There is no point in listing all of your roles if you do not describe what you did and provide evidence so it's important to focus on the role description/summary.
Education → You can include information about your school here as well as any clubs you are involved in or awards/acknowledgements you have received.
Skills & Endorsements → This is where you can highlight your important skills such as ‘leadership’ and ‘communication’. You can also ask your connections to endorse these skills and this will add credibility.
Making Connections → When you set up your account, it is important to start connecting! You could connect with friends, other students that use DiscoverSTEMM, etc. Once you have done that, make sure to check out the ‘My Network’ tab as that has several potential connections. Additionally, regularly posting, commenting or even liking posts will help you gain visibility and therefore connections!
Posting → Personally, I find it really useful to post regularly and this can be about different programs/workshops you attend or any awards you received. This helps you gain connections and grow your network. Some simple things you can do to extend the reach of your posts are to tag organisations/people and add hashtags to your post. It is also good to add pictures to make your posts eye-catching!
These are just some simple tips to use when setting up your profile! The main thing to remember is to keep your profile professional . Make sure to check out my (Cherry’s) LinkedIn profile for inspo and don't be afraid to shoot me a message on LinkedIn for more advice!
Hopefully you guys found this useful and make sure to comment your own tips if you have any!!
